Childhood Homes

Framed photos of the childhood homes

The framed photos show the childhood homes of Hans and Christel Nieske, née Hennemann. After they married, they created their own household. Together they managed the “Preisterei,” the parsonage in Zernin. Despite the levies they were required to pay to the state, they were able to run a successful farm.

Christel Nieske remembers:

“We were pretty well off financially. We began the Preisterei in the fall of 1950 with two cows, two borrowed cows from Büdner Wendt, two cold-blood horses and one warm-blood horse (a red mare, a light chestnut foal and a bay), plus a few pigs and chickens. We left our farm almost two and a half years later with a stock of four workhorses, three foals, 28 cows, forty pigs, ten sheep and eighty hens.”
