In 2006, the Berlin Senate adopted a comprehensive concept for the remembrance of the Berlin Wall. Accordingly, the Berlin Wall Foundation was established in 2008, and the memorial site at Bernauer Straße became the central place of remembrance. For the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 2014, a new permanent exhibition was opened at the site. The then Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, and the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, participated in the commemorative events.
