In the night of the fall of the Wall, people begin to work on the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate with hammer and chisel. They break off small pieces. For many a trophy of victory over the border, for others a piece of memory of this world-shattering event.
Scrapped pieces of the Berlin Wall are quickly traded. Street vendors offer them for sale or lend out hammers and chisels for a fee. Rolf Witt is one of them. As a professional "Mauerspecht" (wallpecker), he designs special souvenirs. He makes earrings and lapel pins from colorful pieces of the Wall or casts fragments in resin. Interested buyers can purchase them at his stand, complete with their own certificate of authenticity.
