Months before they were disbanded, the border troops began reducing their personnel. Burkhard Strelow was discharged from military service early in March 1990.

He celebrated his departure with a bottle of sparkling wine, which he wrapped and decorated with barbed wire from the border strip and a cuff band from his uniform. After emptying the bottle with his comrades, he removed the two mementos and kept them as a reminder of this special moment.
